Becoming

Today was a breakthrough. I had my first truly Israeli conversation. I mean, sure, i've had conversations in Hebrew, but I'm still an American speaking Hebrew. But today, even if it was for just a moment, I was Israeli.

The conversation went something like this:

Nitzan (annoyed): Where were you this morning?
Me: I was at the Ambassador's Residence. Working.
Nitzan: Where's Karen?
Me: I don't know. What do you think, I'm her mother?

I felt so Israeli.
